Applied Mathematics Major - 14 courses (a minimum of 40 credits) in the following three categories:

(Specific course requirements for the Applied Mathematics major can be found on the Requirements tab under Mathematics.)

1. Five required courses in Calculus and Linear Algebra (minimum of 13 credits).

Please follow one the sequences suggested for the Mathematics major.

2. Three required courses: Analysis, a one year long senior seminar requirement, a research requirement (minimum of 9 credits).

  • Please note that APMA E4901, APMA E3900, and APMA E4903 should be taken in this order starting either in the Fall or in Spring of Junior year, according to when E4901 is offered.
  • Please note that in order to register for APMA E3900, students must first secure a mentor within the Columbia Applied Mathematics Department. Once a faculty member has agreed to serve as mentor, a section of APMA E3900 will be opened for the student.

Students are encouraged to begin contacting potential mentors while enrolled in APMA E4001, and, if appropriate, to consult with the instructor of that course for guidance in identifying suitable faculty members.

3. Six electives in mathematics and cognate courses - at least two in mathematics (MATH 2000, APMAE2100 and above) (minimum of 18 credits).

For a list of accepted cognate courses, refer to: https://bulletin.columbia.edu/columbia-college/departments-instruction/mathematics/#requirementstext
